As part of managing and marketing rehab services, does anyone use outcomes software or hire an outside data analysis firm to analyze the clinic's functional outcomes?
Thanks in advance for your response!

Hello, Please look at the following paragraph below from the APTA. Perhaps this is what you are looking for?
"What is APTA CONNECT?
Created through a partnership between Cedaron Medical Inc and the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), APTA CONNECT is a point-of-care, computerized patient record system designed specifically for physical therapists. APTA CONNECT will match your workflow, your experience, and your training to seamlessly document all patient/client management and facilitate quick, accurate, and easy communication with other health care providers and payers. APTA CONNECT will allow you to become part of a national outcomes database that you can use in your practice. This partnership was a part of APTA's mission to develop a national outcomes database that will assist the profession in determining effectiveness of physical therapist practice.
What will APTA CONNECT include?
The system will include a scheduler, patient registration and demographic forms; examination forms that will include preformatted templates for each body area and system, a plan of care form, and treatment program forms. The system also will produce correspondence to physicians and payers that is extracted from your patient record, so there will be no need to re-enter data. In addition, it will perform charge captures and communicate with your existing billing system.
APTA CONNECT offers the ultimate end-user flexibility. Workflow and each pre-formatted template can be customized down to the level of the individual user onsite and saved as your own forms.
When will APTA CONNECT be ready for delivery?
The final product will be available mid 2005.
How do I get more information?
You can contact Karen Bond at Cedaron Medical Inc, PO Box 2100, Davis CA 95617. Telephone: 1-800/424-1007 or 530/758-7007. E-mail: kbond@cedaron.com
What kind of reports can I generate?
APTA CONNECT will offer useful reports to track patient progress, practice management trends, referral, and resource utilization. Any data, be it initial patient registration or follow-up appointment, needs to be entered only once, regardless of the number of users. With APTA CONNECT, you can compare your performance from different time periods or benchmark your clinicians with each other. If you want an administrative report that is not currently available in APTA CONNECT, you can create it onsite and save it to meet your exact needs.
How will APTA CONNECT link to the outcomes database?
APTA CONNECT is the mechanism that will build the first national outcomes database for physical therapy devoted solely to the concerns of physical therapists, their patients, and payers. Although you will be able to choose from an array of standardized instruments that come with APTA CONNECT, such as the SF-36 and the Oswestry, you also will have access to APTA’s latest clinical outcomes instrument, OPTIMAL. APTA’s Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire is also part of the outcomes segment of APTA CONNECT.
How was Cedaron Medical chosen?
Cedaron Medical Inc was selected following a rigorous review process. More than 100 vendors were sent a “Prospectus for Partnership” for the project. A review panel was established that represented the APTA Board of Directors, clinicians, businesspeople, and APTA staff. The review process included onsite presentations to the review panel and selected visits to clinical installations and vendor headquarters.
Where are we in the development of APTA CONNECT?
The plan now entails designing the content of the electronic record system, which will include the tests and measures described in the Guide for Physical Therapist Practice, as well as a template for each content area that will be used as an examination form. In addition, alpha and beta testing is planned for spring and summer 2004."

I probably won't be spelling some of these correctly, but some options out there:
FOTO - focus on therapeutic outcomes Raintree has the capability There is another software program that has competed with FOTO for years but I can't think of the name of it.
Technically, specialized software programs aren't completely necessary... you could think of what outcome data you'd be interested in, create a data collection form, create a database in Access then dump the data after queries into Excel.

Nicole,
I've never used FOTO. Ed D. (long last name) and Dennis Hart and Linda Resnik have all done quite a bit of research on outcomes and they utilized the data in FOTO.
If you happen to plan on going to the annual in Boston, FOTO may be there. I've seen their product a couple of times in the exhibit hall when I have gone. I don't have the vendor list here at the moment to know if FOTO will be available this year.

I actually created my own outcomes program years ago and have it available on PTupdate.com I personally feel it is one of the most complete out there. I made sure it was able to collect a ton of information in an easy manner, and to be able to tie outcomes to everything from attendance, treatments provided, insurance classification, home program compliance, etc. It also incorporated functional improvement and status long before the term "functional" became trendy. The data can be manually calculated, or someone with programming skills can create a data base for those businesses with a high volume.

Steve... that was the other system. I couldn't remember the name. I'd be hesitant to use TAOS only because I haven't read anything about their outcome tool regarding reliability, validity or any numbers on its response to change.

SJ, Heres a little bit on that.
What about reliability and validity? Reliability and validity information is detailed in the article TAOS Functional Index: Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Outcomes Tool, published in the Journal of Rehabilitation Outcomes Measurement, May 1998 (J Rehabil Outcomes Meas, 1998, 2(2), 55-61 © 1998 Aspen Publishers, Inc.). TAOS is a self-reporting system; therefore, rater reliability is not an issue and does not require a credentialing process.
I got this from their website. http://www.therapeuticassociates.com/Tools/taosq.htm#J
