Which brings me back to my poll question which no one answered: Should POPTs be banned in US?

Anyone take note that of the 30+ MDs who billed > $1M in any of the last couple of years, not a single one was an orthopod? How did that work out?

I do not believe POPS should be allowed in thew U.S. They are a conflict of interesets first of all, they present an opportunity for monopoly, and they cross the line between having services for the care of the patient, or simply to make money. The vast majority of the pops I know of give substandard care as compared to other clinics, and the physicians do not come acrossed the hall to monitoe patients as they tell the patients.

We should stop calling this POPTS, and go with APTA's approach, and a more appropriate name: Referral for Profit.

Physicians aren't the problem. Ownership and control of professional services outside of the profession is the problem.
Fix ownership issues, and Referral for Profit can't exist.

Here in Idaho, our practice act has a clause that may be interpreted that any PT working in a referral for profit situation (i.e. POPTS) is ineligible for licensure. Our state association is asking the State Attorney General for an opinion at the moment.

I think we need to realize that we can't tell the physicians what to do anymore than we want them telling us what to do. That means independent boards of PT licensure that have the ability to enforce state practice acts independent of the Board of Medicine.

Also, we need to take studies like the ones I posted above to the regulatory agencies and have them realize that "referral for profit" is occuring and is costing the taxpayers big $$$.

Mr. Simonetti: That is very interesting fact. Please let me know where did you get that fact from? I haven't had the chance to thoroughly read about this news. Thanks.
