I am a new private practice owner (5 months), solo with no front desk/tech. I have been fortunate enough to get to where I am needing to hire a part time PT. How have all of you gone about this process? Specifically, if I want someone to start in a month, they will not be credentialed with their Medicare / Medicaid / BlueCross, etc. numbers. We know that this takes months to complete. Most, if not all of the PT's in my town work for the hospital or prn for facilities in which they do not have to be individually credentialed. So, 90% of the "pool" will not have provider numbers. Any suggestions?

Eric,
As far as I know, Medicare and Medicaid are the only two that you need to worry about specific provider numbers. Do you bill with HICFA 1500 or electronic billing? The regular insurances, like Blue Cross and Blue Shield, you just have to notify in writing to your contract address who the new PT is and their credentials, sometimes have to include their license etc. For Medicare, I would call you provider number and see if you are set up to add a PT. My Medicare number and contract is already set up in a way that all I have to do is notify them of the addition and fill out a few pages of the "main form" which is just about their credentials etc. I'm told it would take 2-4 weeks for them to be on board and ready to bill.

One more thing, don't forget about the NPI (National Provider Identifier) number :)

Eric,
I am not sure about a PTA, my first thought is that because they are working under the direction of a PT that you bill under the PT credentials that is in charge of that patient. I am not sure on that one though...maybe someone else has a thought on that for you.

You can request that the ID numbers be retro dated to the PT's start date and hold billing until you receive these numbers.
I'm not sure what Medicare will allow but you can retro date a start date 6 months with BCBS. You can not even obtain a BCBS number without first having that Medicare number.
