I just started my first semester of school and I was wondering what type of degree (BA)
A physical therapist should have...I plan on getting my masters?
Can someone show me the correct path...I feel like I'm getting the run around at school.

Hello,
To the best of my knowledge, there is no "correct or best" path to take. However, based on viewing discussions, I believe that the Master's program in PT is a step in the right direction. You learn more but more importantly, you are exposed to research which is the foundation of how we diagnose and treat. Without it, our practice would mean nothing and we would never get paid for it. I personally know PTs who graduated with a Bachelors degree and are doing quite well. I am graduating from a Master's program myself and I enjoyed every minute of it. It seems a little strange to me that you have a choice to choose a program which offers a bachelors or Masters degree. Many if not all have either one or the other. Others are changing their programs to Masters programs as we speak. This is my view. Hopefully others will respond as well.

I read your question a little differently than does JMA. You're asking what BS degree would best prepare you for acceptance into an MPT or DPT program right?
Used to be that PT programs would look for pre-requs, and a foundation in Bio or Psych. That's changing. Most of the emerging DPT's have BS in everything ranging from Bio to Psych to Accounting to Zoology.
I'd suggest talking to a program director and getting their take, but I think you'll be told the same thing. Elizabeth Rogers, PT, EdD always enjoys answering questions like yours. Why don't you drop her a line at Rogers@elon.edu I'm sure she'd be glad to offer advice.

Hello,
Thank you Drew for pointing out what I think I missed. I agree with what you are saying about the variety of degrees one can graduate with before applying to a bachelors or masters program. From personal experience, I find that a foundation in one of the sciences adequately prepares a student for the rigors of the PT curriculum. This may include biology, chemistry, physics, etc. I observed that others who had backrounds in other subjects, that did not include the sciences, had some difficulty with the course load in general. In the end, they all pulled through with some help from fellow classmates. Hope this helps.

Do you think it's best to just find a Univ who offers a MPT, or to get a Bio degree then go on? Do you think attending community college will count against me?

You must choose the best path for yourself but honestly, any major, provided you have the right prerequisites can be an advantage.
I was a history major and did my sciences after graduation. It took me additional time but I did not feel underprepared for school. Furthermore, I feel that my liberal arts background taught me how to write, think, analyze and speak more effectively. It seems to be much easier for me to write a paper or prepare a presentation than some of my science only prepared friends [IMG]http://www.rehabedge.com/forums/smile.gif[/IMG]
