A patient is getting an MRI next week for a likely meniscus tear. He asked me whether or not his knee was actively inflammed had a bearing on the outcome of the test.

His symptoms consistently present after he runs, and has not done so for several weeks, so he has no real pain or swelling. After he runs, he has intense pain, slight effusion, and strong muscle guarding for at least a week.

I know cortisone shots can enhance the image obtained. Would the current state of his knee with respect to inflammation have any effect on the outcome of the MRI?
