Hi Group, After several discussions in this forum and talking to former classmates of mine, I have decided to pursue an MBA. I am going to begin the application process and attempt to go to school part-time while I continue to work. It seems that no decent jobs exist in my area and I am not going to relocate to Kansas to get a cushy job like everyone else. For now I will go "through the motions" and continue with my current job. I have become very frustrated with seeing 6 patients per hour and the lack of quality care they receive. And it is not just here. I mean, I was just talking to a friend of mine. At his clinic they sell items to patients at an unbelievable mark-up. They sell LB magnets for $50 and lumbar rolls for $30. Their management encourages them to push items and sell patients on the "miracles" that have happened with these products. They are told to especially push the products on Medicare patients who are more likely to buy. I have had it, I am not a cheesy salesman. I am going to leave this field and enter business where this form of capitalism is the norm and is expected.

Joe,
Having recently completed an MBA in Healthcare Management, I congratulate you on your choice. I understand your frustration, it's similar to why I went back to school. You'll find that there are other ways, more ethical ways to improve profit margin, efficiency, and effectiveness of your operation.
In the meantime, please allow me to recommend some reading for you. I'm currently reviewing a book for the Journal of Pediatric Physical Therapy titled:
MANAGERIAL AND SUPERVISORY PRINCIPLES FOR PHYSICAL THERAPISTS, by Larry Nosse, Deb Friberg, and Peter Kovacek.
I'm planning on writing a fairly favorable review of the book. I think it should be required reading for all physical therapists, and certainly for therapists who have been promoted to managerial positions with no formal management training. For people like myself, with a little more classroom training under the belt, it makes for a handy quick reference for financial management, and CQI tools.
For more information . . . look for the full review in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Pediatric Physical Therapy. One more reason to join the APTA . . . one more reason to join the PEDS SECTION!
