My college and I were wondering what the treatment strategy is for a 8 year old boy with fairly severe systemic JRA? He has been getting endurance activities and stretching routine and so forth. He has a motorized wheelchair (provided through state/federal funding) that was initially for when he had exacerbations. At his last few IEP's the mother has insisted that he NEVER use his wheelchair, no matter how much pain he might be in. This year we received a script from his doctor to only use his wheelchair when he is tired.
He is also very small for his age and the time it takes for him to walk to the cafateria/playground/outside classrooms is greatly increased especially when his symptoms are exacerbated.

We are looking for some outside input on this subject. Our thought is to use the wheelchair during exacerbation for joint protection. Are we out of line?
