anyone know of any evidence of this actually working? I have a high profile patient that was prescribed this modality after discectomy.

she is the wife of the president of the hospital I work for and asked her MD to do this since it helped with her husband in PT.

I've never used it for this purpose and couldn't find any research to endorse or refute the use.

Anyone?

Nope, can't say I have ever read anything solid for that particular purpose, but why not give a try? You may want to dig into this reference just as a justification for the attempt with this treatment. Remember, it's yo bosses' wifey!

Thanks for the reference John. I have used it for 2 treatment sessions so far, but it hasn't affected the tightness. She even called the nurse to make sure I was doing it correctly as I let her know I had never used it for her symptoms (and explained why her husband may have needed it for his tendinitis).

We'll see what happens with it.

she called the nurse?? Are you kidding me.

Maybe my pts should call their NCMs to make sure I'm doing my mobs correctly:)

Why not explain to her that in your professional opinion iontophoresis is not effective for the treatment of back pain. Explain to her that their are more effective treatments that you have found more helpful. Maybe both her and her husband will appreciate and respect your honest opinion.

Already went that route, too. I have her doing stretches, stengthening, stabilization, etc.

She's pretty gung ho--she's going skiing this weekend (5 weeks post surgery) and is completely weak in the "core" muscles. I advised against doing too much, so we'll see.

I am sure you have already done this but be sure to document that the pt is going skiing against your advice. Always have to CYA.

Wow!, the patient is going skiing and has weak core muscles?! Yes, absolutely agree with the previous post. It will be very surprising for me to see the same patient, with the same level of pain, that they came in with initially after the trip.

Ken...whatever ended up happening with this patient? Did she end up going skiing?

Sorry I missed your post earlier, but I have seen baclofen and magnesium sulfate used effectively with ionto and muscle spasms.

feel free to contact me to discuss more in depth.

Thanks.

Yeah, she went skiing, but didn't do her exercises as I had hoped. Her only complaint now is continued tightness in her low back area (paraspinals) around the incision. She has "loosened up" a bit as she can not bend and touch the floor, but she states it doesn't "feel right". Still some palpable tightness, but overall better.

She goes to see the referring surgeon on Monday.

This is preaching to the choir, but be sure and send the MD a note including her skiing trip.
