I am 90% sure that I suffered one 2 days ago while working out (barbell lunges). There was a noticeable bulge about 4" diagonally/inward from my ASIS that virtually disapeared today. It's the second time it's happened in the last 2 months. No associated pain, I just know it's there. Should I see an MD, a physio?, a chiro? Is there anything from a therapeutic exercise standpoint I can do? are there any predisposing factors to such an event?

I am eternally greatful for any input.

Valsalva's and heavy lifting can set one up with developing a hernia. I would definitely check it out. Perhaps it can be palpated. I would not advice lifting heavy weights just to see if it appears again. Having a weak core can be a factor to such an event. However, I am not aware of studies that show a correlation between core strength and hernias.

Yep...you have a reducible hernia. This is a surgical case. You can wait if you like, but you run the risk of having a non reducible or incarcerated hernia the next time.

Core, go see an MD. If your "core" is split, it's split, not weak. You will require sewing up.

Core, there may be some cause for concern if your inguinal hernia is incarcerated...you may have to bail it out. :)

I couldn't pass that one up! :)

Hi everyone,

Met with the doc yesterday - I'm booked for a surgical consult, but not until the end of June. This would likely put my surgery date into August. In your professional opinions, what should I avoid in the meantime (other than heavy lifting with vlasalva). Is there anything else that will exacerbate it? I play sports such as basketball and soccer - would you advise I continue? Do you think abdominal training is still alright?

I'm wondering if waiting this long will increase the chances of the hernia becoming incarcerated or non-reducible. Is it relatively safe to assume that if I don't perform any heavy resistance exercise that it will remain as is and not get worse?

I was just hoping to be able to get this surgery done sooner. I am hopeful that this will be a laporoscopic procedure. I've also been reading about "tension-free" hernia procedures. Any thoughts?

A lot of questions, I know. Thank you all again for your insight - it has done wonders in guiding me towards the most prudent treatment.

Post/op inguinal hernia repairs are very painful and you should plan not to be doing much afterwards. Dad knows this personally.

Avoiding any heavy lifting would be advisable. If it starts appearing and not disappearing, then it is growing, which usually means more that has to be repaired and more time to heal.

I have heard of hernia belts to use to prevent the hernia from protruding outward and keeping it at bay. It might help a little

Core, I would certainly avoid abdominal workouts. Get a hernia belt - they can really help in protecting the hernia from "spilling out" while you continue to work and live before your consult. The belt will give some protection, but NOT enough to eliminate the forces that one can generate (or the opponent) in soccer or basketball. The abrupt changes of direction combined with trunk rotation and twisting in both sports, contact with opponents etc etc., make them high risk. Accept it! You are snookered for a while. Use bike, walk, elliptical etc to stay fit (with the belt on!).
