I am trying to make a point to someone, so I was wondering if anyone or everyone could let me know the correct way to measure leg length? If you know a source that states how to measure it I would appreciate that as well.
Thank You.

According to Magee's textbook pg. 590-591, "true leg length...is measured in a supine position...obtain the distance from the ASIS to the medial or lateral malleolus. A difference of 1 to 1.3 cm is considered normal."

I have been to Richard Jackson courses and he has a survey of military personell where they did standing AP pelvis Xrays with both feet in subtalar neutral and knees straight (or something like that so that everything out of the vision of the film was the same right vs. left) and found that anything greater than 5mm was likely to cause symptoms. Conversely, people with symptoms were much more likely to have a Leg length discrepancy of greater than 5mm.

Tom,
Would you have a reference for that? I'd like to have that study.

Pearce, There are several methods. Here are some well documented ways. I think #3 below is the military study you refer to.
Alex
1) Beattie P, Isaacson K, Riddle DL, Rothstein JM. Validity of derived measurements of leg-length differences obtained by use of a tape measure. Phys Ther. 1990;70:150-157.
2)Woerman AL, Binder-Macleod SA. Leg length discrepancy assessment: accuracy and precision in five clinical methods of evaluation. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther. 1984;5:230-239.
3) Goss, Moore. Compliance wearing a heel lift during 8 weeks of Military Training in Cadets with limb length equality. JOSPT March 2004, Vol 34 Number 3.

Randy and Alex,
The study was by Friberg,O. Clinical Symptoms and Biomechsnics of Lumbar Spine and Hip Joint in Leg Length Inequality, Spine, Fol. 8, No 6, 643-651, 1983.
I have to admit I didn't read the study but the raw data is recorded in the syllabus of the Richard Jackson course "Functional Relationships of the Lower Half" it was an excellent course by the way.

Here's a thorough review article:
Brady RJ, Dean JB, Skinner TM, Gross MT. Limb length inequality: clinical implications for assessment and intervention. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther. 2003 May;33(5):221-34. Review.
