Hello, I have been given a task of writing a first draft for a literature review. I have gathered articles related to the topic I am researching but I am having difficulty how to actually write it. I have read the literature reviews of the articles I have on my topic and I am trying to relate what I have found to my area of interest. Some research books that I have looked at tell you how to find sources but not what to do with them after reading it. Obviously, clarification is needed here. Serious help and advice is warranted and will be greatly appreciated. This is my first research class and I am a novice at research. Thank you for your attention

The pieces you've got are the research articles and your own thesis.

The literature review is to help you combine and relate the two pieces to meet three primary goals:

1) assure yourself your research topic is relatively fresh and innovative

2) to convince others in the scientific community that the research you intend to do is original and does not inadvertently replicate research that has already been done. (Like, if you had this great idea for equating mass and energy and did 23 years of research only to find out that some guy named Al already did that and helped blow up part of Japan and various Pacific atolls with the technology based on it.)

3) to establish a foundation upon which to construct your thesis, unless you have developed an entirely new paradigm that has no precedent.

The literature review should address colloquialistic questions like:

1. Is this study based on any existing scientific knowledge that is valid and verifiable?
2. Is this study really new or is it just a rehash of old stuff?
3. Where does this study fit in with all the other investigations in this particular field of research?
4. How would this study build upon or destroy existing studies that appear to be related to it?
