Hello,
I would like to know your experiences once you graduated from PT school. I hear many advantages and disadvantages about starting out in a private vs. hospital setting. Is there a trend? Have things changed these past few years or have they stayed the same. Where is the trend going these days? Thanks for your FYI

I think a hospital setting is a great place to start. You will have more variety and opportunity to learn from others. You will have well rounded experience if you choose to move on in a couple of years or the possibility of moving up the ladder if you choose to stay.

JMA:

In the past, it was always recommended that PTs start in the hospital setting to get broad experience and exposure to a number of areas. In the previous climate, that was sound advice (although I did not follow it).

With current job market however, things are different. So, if you definitely know what you want to do, then I would say pursue it directly. In this way you will be able to gain experience, take courses and learn in your chosen area. Two years later, this puts you way ahead of anyone who has completed a few rotations at a hospital. If you take this route, you will probably require more initiative. You will have to read, take courses, ask questions, etc. It is sometimes easier to learn in a structured hospital setting.

If you are unsure of what area you want, then I would look to a large hospital. You will be exposed to different areas and get a broad background.

Good luck. I know many new grads in the NYC area are ready to take any position that comes along

Thank you for the info MCAp,
I realize there are a lot of students like me who are debating this issue as graduation approaches. Yes, many here in NYC are willing to take any position in any setting at this point. I would like to work in a hospital where there are many rotations that allows exposure to different areas of interest. This is where I would like to go when I am done. This is my goal, at least in theory.
