Again, I have been watching quite a bit of football over the holidays and have another interesting observation; glare strips.
Some players wear black grease stripes under their eyes and others appear to wear an adhesive black strip. I noticed too that many players have things written in white on top of the black glare strips, sometimes their team name or something else which would seem to negate the initial intended use. A quick online search revealed an interesting study showing that the black grease has a positive significant difference in vision acuity versus no difference with the adhesive glare strips. There appears to be only one study in this area.

It makes me laugh now when I see these strips, half the time worn too low on the cheeks, on college and professional players. They aren't doing crap for the player. I wonder if the trainers know this. It turns out the old guys had it right the first time with the black grease. Tom Brady knows what is going on, Reggie Bush does not.

And how about the Nasal Strips, if you need more air - open your mouth. Now if I'm a professional football player and Breathe Right will pay me a million dollars a year to wear a silly thing on my nose - I'll wear it with pride! I thought the black strips under the eyes were for intimidation only. Don't some baseball players use them as well?

I found an interesting article on anti-glare products. It doesn't appear that their referred studies have been published.
"Studies show they work best when applied in an area of the cheek or nose that the eye can see"

Since you are in the Army maybe you can sympathize. I used to have to camo quite often, I found putting black all around my eyes, the parts that I coulds see helped me see better, or at least I thought it did. More importantly, it made me look cool. I'll admit more than once I checked out my patterns in a mirror just to have a really cool one. Even tried KISS ones.

Well Randy there is actually certain technique (written in one of the many army manuals) that you are supposed to use when you cammo. Dark color pain should be used in the more prominent portions of your face such as your cheeks, nose and chin while lighter colors should be used around the eyes and lips. I used to make fun of soldiers who placed random stripes on their face or funny patterns.

Yes, Alex, I know, I had to teach soldiers that, but except for directly under the eye the prominent parts are what you can see.
Most of the time I just slopped the stuff on, 15 minutes of sweating blurs it all together anyway.
