first time poster... my question is to all PTs, how many of you are familiar with Gary Gray and his approach to functional exercise and training? my current clinic is very much on board with his 'functional science' and i have enjoyed what i have experienced of him. i have yet to attend one of his seminars but look forward to doing so in the future... just curious as to how prevalent (in this small cross section of clincians) his influence is!

Still working toward becoming a PT, however the place I interned at was familiar with him and were actually sponsoring a seminar of his for all their associated clnics. Also one of the PT's there lectured in some of Garys seminars.

If you search Gary Gray, you will find a few threads on this topic.  I will say that there are varying opinions of him.  Personally I think his approach is great and plan on taking his Chain Reaction Course the next time it is in the NW.  My former employer is very involved with the entire "functional science" approach and actually was in the first or second class of GIFT to become a Fellow of Applied Functional Science.  Just my two cents.

Always wondered about his "Functional science" bit.
Compared to Dysfunctional science?
Science is science.

You'll probably like his seminars and other products, then think to yourself, "why didn't I think of that on my own."  It is mostly common sense info but he puts it together well.  Definitely good for a young clinician or someone that feels like they have been doing the same things with patients and getting bored with their practice.  Uses a lot of made up goofy terminology and starts the class off with an hour of introducing yourself, two things that turn be off a bit, but just my opinion.

Regifting... you already know the stuff.  He just "packages" it slightly differently to create the mirage that you don't know what you do know.

Humbly...don't many con-ed courses do the same thing?  We know (or should know) the stuff, but the courses give us perspective?  That's how I try to look at con-ed.  I don't expect someone to stand before me and split the atom, but if they give me a different perspective on top of science-based reasoning, I'm good.

I tend to go to multi disciplinary conferences these days: no visits to "new approach" or "after 30 years of developing this revolutionary technique/system" workshops anymore for me.
I'll attend research presentations like last weekend - at the drop of a hat. Psychiatrist, PhDPT, MD and so forth - all with great new stuff (research) on the brain and pain.
I do not need MORE "new" techniques to move a body part of a patient - Sharmann, Kaltenborn, Evjenth, Cyriax, Greenman, Mitchell, Kucera, Janda, Winkel, Maitland....and I could go on. The last one to really have an effect was Butler in a course in 1999 - and his presentation was chockfull of neuroanatomical research and studies that I hadn't seen yet.

I was wondering if anyone has completed Gary Gray's GIFT fellowship. I am a personal trainer and I am interested in applying to this program but is very expensive, almost $15,000 not including the travel expense of traveling to Michigan 3x's throughout the year. I really enjoy the way he teaches function but I worry about spending that much money and not receiving a degree of some sort. Does this fellowship have any clout in the fitnesss/physically therapy world? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!!

The entire staff at the clinic I worked at previously has taken or is taking the GIFT program.  I am not sure what kind of clout it currently has, I do know it is very expensive and very extensive.  They were working on their assignments and discussions constantly and having having debates during the day on topics.  From my understanding they are not accredited at all, but you do earn the title of Fellow of Functional Science.

They really enjoyed the program, and they felt that they got a lot out of it.  I was interested in taking it, but at this time, spending the equivalent of what I spent on one year of grad school isn't in my budget.
