I have been accepted to both Emory and MUSC for their DPT programs. I have a little over a week to decide and plan on visiting both schools before then. I just wanted any advice any one has to offer. I would rather live in Charleston (MUSC), but I think Emory would be a better school and might look better to employers in the future. Emory also costs about twice as much as MUSC and I will have to get loans if I go to Emory. What advantages do you think one school would have over the other? If you are a PT, would you hire someone with a degree from Emory over someone from MUSC? Any advice would be great. Thanks

Hello Hollie,
I have several friends who graduated from Emory's DPT program and they seem to have a decent entry level knowledge, as well as decent clinical skills. I have never heard of MUSC, but one thing I would say is, especially in PT school, a lot of education is what you make of it. I feel I received a great education from my public university, and was prepared for the clinical atmosphere. As long as I interviewed well and spoke of sound clinical judgement, no one cared where I got my education, and I was offered several jobs coming out of school. I was working side by side Emory grads making the exact same as them, yet I had about 80K less in college loans. Take it for what its worth. One good way to see if MUSC is worth it is call them and ask what the first time board passing rate is for their graduates. That at least gives you a good idea if the school prepares you with the knowledge you need to pass your boards after you graduate.

The average pass rate for MUSC is 96% and Emory is 99%. I don't think that's first time pass rate. I know Emory's first time pass rate is 93%.

without hesitation: Chalreston ROCKS!!! but besides that... go with the cheaper accreditted program ALWAYS!!!!
where you graduate does not matter, especially in this healthcare market.
don't ask anyone else, do not pass go, I am telling you: CHEAPER TUITION = BETTER CHOICE

This is a no brainer. MUSC is where you want to live and it costs less. You will enjoy your college years much more if you enjoy where you live and know you wont be in debt for years after you are done with school.
I have yet to look at where an employee has graduated from in the hiring process. If they interview well, have good clinical rotations and are eager to continue to learn those are the selling points. Salary is not dependent on where you have graduated.
good luck
