I know this has been brought up before but want to discuss it again. With PT education (I am in my final year of PT school) there is currently a big focus on EBM/EMPractice. I know this was not always the case and that many experianced therapists were not exposed to it during their original formal education. Through continuing education and higher degrees they may or may not have been exposed to it. So for those of you on here do you feel that you practice EBM/EBP? Do the majority of your colleagues and other PTs you know practice according to such guidelines? What does EBM mean to you? I am just curious as to what those outside the educational arena think/know about EBM and would like to know how others use it in their dailey practice. Look forward to a good discussion.

MPTStudent,

Great question, EBP has become quite the catch phrase and is often bastardized in clinical practice. I think most clinicians use EBP intermittently but definately not consistantly. Problems with using EBP include time with the volumes of information being produced and changing clinical practice based on emerging evidence. Unfortunately, research is often used in a selective manner to back theoretical constructs and resisting clinical change as oppossed to guiding and changing those theoretical constructs.

Certainly from my own clinical perspective I use EBP to guide my treatment/diagnosis as I consider this the best way to increase my odds of having a successful outcome with a client and it allows me to have a systemt to determine if I am in fact being successful with my treatment.

Other thoughts?

Steve
