what exactly do you feel you will "catch" from touching people? I can see if you have an open spot on your hand, but really???
Seriously, you might offend a few people by treating them as unsanitary, especially in a healthy outpatient population.

You know, it depends. I worked for a group of physicians and the physiatrist taught me something. Sometimes I do use gloves when treating the cervical spine. My hands are small and sometimes my hands can't function well with heavy heads and thick necks, so a trick is to actually wear gloves. NOT because of the risk of acquiring some infection or anything, but it reduces the sliding of my hands and I can focus on what I need to be doing. Haven't dropped a head yet! :)

I have only used gloves on those patients who just had surgeries that were draining or that were exposed to air and also when I had a healing cut going over surgical sites on patients.

Good question,

I only use gloves on post surgical cases and have always been attentive to washing my hands between each patient in an out patient orthopaedic clinic. Despite being cautious, I developed an MRSA positive infection about two years ago so it is certainly worth considering...

Skiing, making snow people with my son, pruning roses, hauling garden waste to the tip, handling raw timber, pulling weeds, these occasions all work better with gloves. Handling patients?, not unless I have a cut and risk bleeding or catching a nasty infection in a hospital setting. Otherwise I would reduce the very important sensitivity I need to do my best work.
Do you have other OCD symptoms Aph?

Ginger, you're a pansy! You wear gloves pruning roses!!! What a sissy - afraid of a few thorns? ;) Every time I prune mine WITHOUT gloves, I'm going to get an image of the Pediculator needing to wear gloves! LOL I do wear gloves pulling weeds though. I also wear gloves when I'm on the tractor. And... I also have some cool gloves with gel in them when I mountain bike. And ginger, because I know you are wondering... I DO wear gloves in the late fall/winter/early spring when I am riding the beast. ;)

Here is another reason to glove up.... Stank. Past tense of stink.
Doing some GH mobilization, STM to subscapularis? Some folks have axillae that really smell. Getting this funk off your hands is next to impossible, no matter what soap or other substance one tries to use. This happened to me once. Once. While no disease has ever been found to be transmitted through sweat, to the best of my knowledge, stinky hands can wreck your day. Glove up, or you may become known as Johnny Onion Hands, not to be confused with his more famous brother Edward.

Also, I hope that most clinics are now doing the hand sanitizers in addition to soap and water.
Simple, easy, effective, and nicely fragrant.

Johnny Onion Hands...I hate to admit it...but he's got a point, it is pretty nasty.

So when you who do glove up don your protection...latex? non latex?

Definitely non-latex. Don't want to find out that someone has a bad allergic reaction to it, especially if they don't know about it.

I'd hardly call this an OCD symptom. I might have a few obsessions, but no compulsions, and therefore couldn't be considered OCD. More like, I don't want any fungus or bacteria as SJ said, I don't want "the funk", as Shill said, and I just plain don't want certain people's nasty skin on me. Sorry if that's offensive, but if it's nasty to me, I ain't touchin' it.. and I don't want to risk catching ANYTHING at all, including someone's cold or whatnot when I touch my face. If anything, I think it's professional behavior.. you won't see nurses, doctors, or RTs doing anything on a patient without them.

Only use gloves on TMJ work inside the mouth and when around open or oozing areas (extremely rare in my practice). For a few decades now.
Use anti-bacterial gel in between each patient - in full view of the patient(s).
The smelly pits? Yeah - I get those the gel takes care of the stink on my hands (three washes).

The gloves (non-latex) don't do squat for the BAD breath clients I have - YE GODS. Two of them in the same day - put me off my lunch......Smell them at five feet distance....Ewww.

OCD is characterised by habit or behaviour that drives a person to be on the alert for and or to respond to the prospect of perceived incompletes, locii of concern or antagonistic anomalies in your field of perception. Causing that person to act in a way that is time consuming and considered irrational. Sounds like you may qualify Aph. On reading the above rebuttal I can almost hear the high pitched whiney timbre of your voice saying "ANYTHING". Prozac may help.

uhm, obsessive behaviors must be accompanied by related compulsions that attempt to neutralize those obsessions in order to be considered OCD. otherwise, you're just obsessive. not liking gross **** is just that - not liking gross ****. i would've become a nurse if that type of stuff didn't bother me. i'd simply prefer to work with gloves, point blank, and my instructors have said that's fine. it has nothing to do with being whiny, i can do all the same tasks with gloves on my hands.

Why do you care to ask any of us what we think then? Obviously, your perspective is in the minority. As a side note, I have a major pet peeve. IF you choose to wear gloves, take the darn things off as soon as you are done using them! I hate more than anything to see anyone wearing gloves touching light switches, bed controls, wheelchair handles, door knobs.... the person with gloves touching all those things is contaminating the environment (IF the person is utilizing gloves for the intended manner in reducing their likelihood of acquiring an infectious entity). Aph, you have to admit, it is unusual to wear gloves any time you touch a patient. Sure, you can do it, but it is somewhat impractical. I hope you realize that you can probably have a greater likelihood of acquiring some disease by pushing a grocery cart in the store or working out at a local health club. LOL There's some nasty stuff in those areas and it didn't come from some person's skin! (I can assure you of that!)

Tweety the rose thorns round here are big enough to hang my hat on and sharper than a white pointers tooth, why just last week I used a couple to slice bread, trim the hedge and was still sharp enough to pick my teeth after a barbecue. If I hadn't used my leather gloves tp prune em I'd have bones left with ribbons of flesh hanging . Hah.

Ginger, that is SOOO inappropriate! I can't believe you said that! Someone needs to slap you.

I thought a white pointer was a cat, but it's a fish? That image ruins my image of a big cool cat with sharp teeth. LOL
