For those of you that are members of the APTA (hmmm, or not - I'm not sure if it matters or not, but I think you'd have to be a member....) - anyways, another physical therapist put together a petition that calls for action to truly target the public and educate the public about our role in the medical world. Any of you that have had issues with the marketing campaigns of the past, might be interested in voicing an opinion in the matter! Take a look at: http://www.PetitionOnline.com/apta2007/

An update... a bit of a tango over on the blog on evidence in motion... apparently a Colorado delegate is a bit perturbed by a petition (he also posted over on the HPA listserve) ... hmmm... http://blog.myphysicaltherapyspace.com/

How long do we wait? Seems like I graduated in 1991 and things haven't changed since then as far as practical direct access is concerned.

Perhaps this is at least one ticket that needs to be signed in to get it started. A few voices can't do it alone, it take a majority to make itself heard.

Ummm... if vision 2020 is going to be here and obviously that is the journey our profession is on, why wait? A good strategy is to have the marketing parallel and supporting the direction of the profession, wouldn't you think? Wait for direct access and THEN hammer the consumers? Why? Quite a conservative opinion when what will be will be. The current obstacles mentioned will be future obstacles, at least in my opinion. If we wait longer we really don't know any additional obstacles. If consumers start demanding physical therapy services, things will change.

Risk? Hmmm... we do have a license to do what we do, right? The risk of marketing is that other medical professionals may get pissed off? Well, ever since I was a kid, life is life and things happen. Things don't always go my way. I don't like a lot of things that happen, but I deal with it. So, what is the worst that can happen with a marketing campaign?? Our licenses won't be revoked.... we aren't going to lose our profession over marketing... it isn't illegal to market... the more verbal the outrage after some marketing ploy, the more we become noticed AND if the verbal outrage to marketing is not on the up and up and childish in manner, the better we will look in the eyes of the public.... Explain to me the risk because I see no risk. Changing practice acts would cause more of a stir than some marketing campaign. Marketing physical therapy services and physical therapists has nothing to do with direct access. Marketing would empower and educate patients. I practice in a state that isn't direct access.... I can assure you, if a patient asks/requests physical therapy (it has happened in the past with patients I have provided services), the physician doesn't tell the patient no. Why doesn't a physician deny a request for physical therapy services? 1) We are conservative in nature 2) We add little risk to the patient's condition 3) A physician is also into business and a physician isn't going to ruin a relationship with a patient and piss off a patient by denying physical therapy services I can assure you that the petition is finding its way into the hands of delegates. There will be talk... I highly doubt that there will be some official statement. What Peter did is not common and there probably isn't some procedure as to how to handle the petition. For those of you who are APTA members AND if your state has a listserve, alert the members in your state to the existence of the petition. The petition would need to be addressed if it has a lot of undersigned. Also, this is the perfect time of the year to learn if marketing is really an issue. The combined section meeting is coming up in February and topics do get discussed.

Not sure we get the bang for the buck we should with APTA. I sincerely appreciate the efforts, but the cost-benefit ratio doesn't make tons of sense to me sometimes. Our dues (after state and section fees) are nearly identical to the AMA, which has the most powerful lobby among health care providers. I'm not saying we should have the same lobbying power as the AMA. I just wish the APTA could focus a bit more on the here and now vs Vision 2020. Please don't blast me for saying this as I know they are playing important roles in some key legislative issues. I just think the DPT Vision 2020 thing dominates the landscape when we have very pressing issues to deal with right now. My 2 yen.
