What is the effect of direct access and malpractice insurance. If we are granted higher levels of direct access, won't our rates go up to the ridiculous levels that are being seen with physicians?

Possible. Though rates usually go up IN RESPONSE to pay-outs in the insurance world - after 11 years of direct access here in Ontario, Canada, our rates are the equivalent of US$ 140.00-150.00. I have not been able to discover ONE case of a liability lawsuit here. Working in our profession has very little risk compared to MDs - meds, surgery, expectations of the client etc etc. I really do not think your rates will rise dramatically.
