I came across this article on Chiroweb today.  The lead author, William Meeker, was one of my professors when I was at Palmer West and I believe he is now the school president.  I think it gives some insight into the chiropractic profession.  I don't know if there is anything to really make of this article.  I just thought it was interesting and thought that I would share it will the wise minds here at rehabedge...

Fig,

Sounds like Mr. Meeker has it right on the head.  How nice would it be to see well done research on manual therapies from your ranks, and even possibly some collaborative efforts with Pt's on research projects.  There are now and will be in the future plenty of patients to go around.

Tim

Meeker's comments of chiropractors lack of understanding "even to the point of suspicion of science..." is a big reason the profession of chiropractic, IMO, may forever struggle to advance and possibly fade away in the future.  I also believe, and have observed, that the profession seems to pride itself on purposefully wagging it's nose at science and research.  IMO, this is due to an out of control desire to be "physicians" but not MD's in order to appeal to the public.  DC's can't compete with MD's education (nor PT's), knowledge, or scientific accomplishments.  I think many DC's (and "straight" DC schools) therefore stubbornly choose to advocate tx directly opposed standard medicine (anit-immunization, alt med, supplements, "asian" medicines, etc) in order to attain an independent/exclusive patient base.

It'll be hard to change.  PT's history is based upon an early close association with MD"s and mainstream medicine and many of us still have difficulty adopting EBM into our practices.  Good luck.  With leaders like Meeker, the transition might just happen.

Why Dr. Meeker is in a very small majority:

http://www.sheelychiro.com/whatis.htm
quote:

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is the fastest growing natural health care profession in the world. It was discovered in 1895 in Davenport, Iowa, U.S.A. D.C.'s (Doctors of Chiropractic) specialize in locating and correcting a serious condition known as Vertebral Subluxation. A subluxation is a misalignment of one or more of the twenty-four moveable bones of the spine. Subluxations occur when an individual does not have their spine regularly checked from birth. They are most commonly caused by stresses and impacts to the body from poor posture, poor sleeping habits, slips and falls, vehicular accidents, sports impacts, strenuous exercise, work injuries, childhood falls, and the birth process. Subluxations cause dangerous stress to the spinal chord and the delicate spinal nerves as they exit the spine between the spinal bones. This causes irritation to the nerves and affects the body's ability to heal. Nerve interference causes increased susceptibility to disease and disorder in the body. Ill health eventually results. Unfortunately subluxations are most often painless and often go undetected for years.

Emphasis added

How is chiropractic going to - or making an organizational effort to - change these DC's?
