I am about to start to write a case report in order to complete my capstone project to obtain my DPT. I was wondering if anyone had any advice as to things that I should focus on. It has to be suitable for publication but does not have to be published in order to pass. It would be nice though. My tenative title is "Uretopelvic junction obstruction presenting as low back pain in a college athlete". The reason I picked this pt is because UPJ obstruction is usually diagnosed upon pre-natal ultrasound. This guy almost had to have his kidney removed and he presented to me with spinal instability type signs and symptoms. I want to frame this case as Physical Therapists using differential diagnosis on a systems level with respect to direct access. Any comments would be appreciated.

Yes...'Writing Case Reports: A How-to Manual for Clinicians' is by Irene McEwen, PT, PhD. She is the editor for the case reports section of the PT journal. Very detailed book and helped me in publishing a case series a few years back.

Here's another helpful link on case reports:

Jeffre,
My advice is to go ahead and identify which journal that you want to target. Then get some copies of case studies that were published in this journal and use them as models for yours. This will give you a good idea of the proper format and content that the journal is looking for and will save you a lot of time when you submit for publication. Be sure to pay attention to the content of these published case studies. You will need a good tool that measures outcomes i.e. Oswestry for low back pain, NDI for neck as opposed to anecdotal evidence.
