The advantages as professionals include continued professional growth as therapists/clinicians. You must look at your career goals to determine what is appropriate for you.
Look at the APTA website and they will discuss these various options on there.
Patients benefit when their therapists use up to date evidence-based practices to treat the patients.
Board certification (OCS, etc) gives you recognition as being specialized in one area of clinical practice. The DPT provides training that includes differential diagnosis, radiology etc.
Everyone has there own opionins on what is best, but in the end you need to look at your goals as a therapist and map out what you feel will allow you to be the best you can be so your patients can be the best they can be.
Hope this helps

Ok, thanks! I was also wondering if you need continuing education credits to obtain a board certification. Or do I need to take a course/fellowship/residency to be board certified? And also what is the difference between a PT who has a Master's or Doctorate degree?

Check the APTA website for info regarding specialist certification.
As far as the differences between a PT with an MPT vs DPT the answer is quite simple - A lot less student loans. No the answer isnt quite so simple but DPT programs that are transitional focus on classes such as differential diagnosis, pharmacology, radiolgy etc. However there is great variation with some requiring as few as 12 credits of online work while others require 40+ of classroom work - in other words no standardization. Just search the APTA website under education for answers to your questions

You don't need residency or CE classes for board certification. Just a certain number of hours in the appropriate setting over a certain time period. Check the APTA website for details.
