Hello folks,
My brother was in an accident and unfortuanatly avulsed his entire brachial plexus at the nerve root level. He is right hand dominant and the avulsion is on his right side.
The accident occured in the beginning of December and surgery was later performed in Feb using, as far as i can understand, the peroneal and sural nerves as donor nerves to the C5/C6/C7 roots as they apparently had the largest residual stump. C8/T1 were too close to the cord to attempt anything.
It is expected that movement, if any, will occur in 7-8 months and the most that will reuturn will be within 3 yrs.
As I am only a physio student I have very little experience, infact none, in rehabilating patients with this injury, so anyone out there who does your help would be appreciated.
My main questions are does the time for recover sound reasonable? Also what are peoples thoughts on carrying braces/resting splints for the arm. Any good ones out there that help prevent shoulder subluxation?
Cheers! Physio_G
