Does anyone have any input/experience with working with an extremely bright, very motivated child with athetoid CP? I am currently working with a child for the summer (at a summer camp program.. i worked with her last summer as well for 6 weeks). It is amazing to see the gains she has made over the year (she is 7). Motorically, her ability to manage her w/c (propel herself, brakes, etc.), transfer ability, sitting balance and static standing balance has improved tremendously. She is taking a few steps independently as well. Today was my first day seeing her, but I was wondering if anyone had any treatment ideas that would help with this particular type of child. Isn't it rare that a child with athetoid CP becomes an independent ambulator? any input would be appreciated. thanks

Hey Dana,

If you want to give me a call at work, we can problem slove through a couple of treatment options for ya. I've got a kid with athetoid CP now that just below that functional stage (walks I'ly with a walker). PWB-GT made a HUGE difference, but it was combined with a hell of a lot of traditional techniques as well. I'd be happy to walk you through a few treatment ideas, from an NDT approach to some of the newer approaches . . . but it's too much to write in text. I'll also need to get some more information about how she moves.

Dana-
I would have to agree with Andrew. An assistive device for an athetoid child should prove very helpful. These kids lack stability. We need to find ways to give it to them.
