Woj,

This information be of some assistance to you.

Mooney V: Where is the pain coming from? Spine 12:754-59, 1987

I don't have a subscription to Spine, but maybe someone else here does and can forward the article to you. I wouldn't mind having it as well. :)

This won't be online (I believe Spine only goes back to 1996 in their PDF format), but it should be easy enough to obtain through inter-library loan.

Wow, I never really thought of that. They should still be able to get it through some sort of inter-library loan. If not, I can try to get a copy to you, but it might take a couple of weeks.
This is a rather old reference, and in fact does not appear to be a research article; it is a transcript of a speech. If you are looking for similar information, a good place to start is:

Kuslich SD, Ulstrom CL, Michael CJ. The tissue origin of low back pain and sciatica: a report of pain response to tissue stimulation during operations on the lumbar spine using local anesthesia. Orthop Clin North Am. 1991 Apr;22(2):181-7.

You could also do a search for Nachemson or Bogduk - they should address a lot of the same issues.

Charlie

Wojceich,
I believe I have a copy of the Mooney article. I will look for it. May I e mail you if I find it? Then I could send it to you. As I recall from reading the article (and my recollection is less than perfect, as it has been a few years since I read it), Mooney quite clearly states his belief at the time that the structure responsible for low back pain is the disc. I think it fair to say that thinking in most circles has moved on from this, although the disc may be implicated in some cases.

Steve.
