The APTA has just completed employment survey!! Guess what.....the news is very positive!!
The unemployment rate is down about .3 percent and job satisfaction increased from 12.6 to 13.4 percent. There was no mention however of a recent study that has showed NO GROWTH IN SALARIES OVER THE LAST SEVEN YEARS DESPITE A BOOMING ECONOMY.
Another portion of the survey looked at APTA membership and the relationship to employment. Guess what.....those whowere memebers were more likely to be employed full time 77.5 to 58.1 percent!! "These findings relay an important message to physical therapistsabout the value of APTA membership in helping them reach their fullest professional potential......It's an investment that pays off for members."
Of course......could it possibly be that those who are employed full time are more likely to have the money or to be interested enough to join as opposed to hinting that the membership in some way aids in employment. I am not saying membership is a bad thing at all. But I think they are realizing that many PTs are apathetic when it comes to the APTA. They would do better to address our concerns directly.

What do you mean by "address us directly?" How would you suggest that the APTA pay for addressing us directly without dues to pay for mailings, etc.

Drew:
I said.......address our "conerns" more directly. This means that many therapists do not join the APTA because of two reasons. First...the cost is prohibitive - membership in most other prof. organizations is cheaper (even the AMA, I think).
Second....is that right or wrong....many therapists feel that the APTA played a role in our current dilemna.
They need to address these issues more directly. And yes...they do have the postage. I seem to receive enough insurance ad horror stories from them about people who have lost their livelihoods due to disability.
I never said the APTA was terrible. I still think that the more people join....the better off we will be. BUT....to post a survey that was obviously framed to gloss over the current conditions and to imply that membership is the reason for securing full-time employment is wrong.
Bobcat:
I have my problems with the APTA that is for sure....but we unfortunately have no alternative. I know about one or two PTs who are still members.

Mcap: Could it be that maybe people investing in their association are just a little more motivated thus tend to perhaps be slightly more marketable? What do you think? AC

AC:
Sure...that could definitely be a reason. The point is that the study tried to prove a cause and effect relationship as apposed to an association which it really was.
